19 January 2018 – All through

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back to 2018!  Christmas seems like a distant memory, but I hope you had a wonderful time with your children over the festive holiday.

We are now back in full swing, even if the weather is trying its best to disrupt us!  This term we have already had our S2 parents’ reporting and information evening, and more will follow in the coming weeks.  There have been some tweaks to our secondary curriculum and we are explaining what this will mean for your son/daughter then – so please do come along if you can.

This morning I took part in the YPI final for this year as a judge, together with Mrs Donna Ploetner (Chair of our Parent Council), Eleanor Paul, our Quality Improvement Officer (Secondary), and our Head Boy and Girl, Albert and Louise.  The presentations were once again of a high standard (indeed, better than ever!) and the winning group advocated on behalf of the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance which is based in Scone.  SCAA will receive the £3000 available through this scheme, some of which has been raised by the school, while most is donated by the Wood Foundation.  Thanks to Mrs Sandilands and all the staff involved to make this a success.  You can find out more here.

The recent challenging weather has brought opportunities for play but also caused some safety issues within the school.  We recognise that the safety of our pupils is paramount so there has been some restricted breaks in our primary this week.  We hope to resume normal service soon!  In severe weather we will aim to contact you via groupcall if the school needs to be closed.  We will also try to inform you in other ways, including Twitter.  The details are on our website here.  Please note, we do not send messages saying we’re open.  If you think it is unsafe for your child to travel, then this decision is very much yours to make as a parent/carer.

I have written to primary parents recently about changes in senior staff within the school.  There are changes in secondary too, with Mrs Cathy McCabe joining senior management as an acting DHT in February.  Our congratulations to her.  We keep contacts up to date on our website here.

Our second opportunity to be part of Families Connect begins this Thursday from 9-11am.  This is open to parents of our nursery-P3 children and focuses on literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing.  We receive very positive feedback about these sessions, so please do sign up for this opportunity.  Also, our nursery is now very active on Twitter.  You can follow the nursery directly @stjohnsnursery_  The whole school account is @st_johnsacademy

As you know, the school values are fairness, achievement, respect and love.  We are focusing on respect this term with the Golden Rule of ‘Treat others as you would like to be treated’.  I am sure you can find plenty of opportunities at home to reinforce this message over the coming weeks!  We appreciate your support.

Finally, I’m delighted to announce that £2787 was raised in December for SCIAF and we hope to add to this sum during Lent.  £2500 was also raised by the Nativity and Christmas Show for the School Fund.  Thank you so much for your generosity.

With every good wish,

Seán P Hagney
