Mrs Lora Burgess has been appointed to the position of Depute Headteacher within the secondary of St John’s RC Academy.  Mr Hagney, Headteacher, said, “I am delighted to appoint Mrs Burgess to this permanent post within the school after a competitive interview process.  I thank the parents, pupils and representatives from the local authority and the diocese for contributing to this decision.  I know Mrs Burgess will serve this community very well, as she has already over the past 2 years in other posts, and I wish her continued success in the future”.  Mrs Burgess is year head of S1, S2 and S6 and will continue to oversee all aspects of additional support.

2018 Awards Ceremony

Towards the end of June we celebrated our annual awards ceremonies.

In the secondary, we have 2 special ceremonies, for S1-2 and S3-6.  The S1-2 ceremony celebrates the excellence and endeavour of our pupils and we are grateful for the large audience of parents and families who come along and celebrate with us. Mr Seán Hagney gave his Headteacher’s Address, and took the opportunity to highlight all the achievements of the pupils over the last year.  This included the very positive report from the local authority which had been published on the same day.  You can read the ELAV report here.  One young person commented, “It was such a good feeling to be involved; it felt great to be applauded by our friends, teachers and families.”  Another said, “It inspired me; I will work hard to achieve even more for next year.”

Battlefields 2018

On Sunday 3rd June 2018, the 8th Pals Battalion St John’s Academy set off on the Battlefields Trip. Mrs T. Sinclair led the trip with much appreciated help from Mrs Carroll, Mr Wilson and Mrs S. Sinclair. The trip was a great success with day one including a visit to Brugge, a medieval historic settlement. The pupils enjoyed some time relaxing in the sun and exploring the local culture.

On day two we explored the Southern Lip of Ypres Salient where we visited Messines, the Pool of Peace, Sanctuary Wood, Hooge museum, Menin Road, Hill 60 and Black Watch Corner. The Pals were able to walk through an original World War One trench and experienced what it must have been like for our soldiers. Read more
