11 December 2016 – All through
Dear Parents and Carers
During Advent, the school is always busy preparing for Christmas. This year has been no different!
Last week we celebrated our 5th birthday since our official opening in 2011. Our family mass, our birthday parties in school, our community fayre and panto were all great successes. Our panto audience was particularly enthusiastic! I would like to thank all those who turned out for our fayre and panto on a busy Saturday before Christmas. Thanks too to all the local business who took part, to Live Active Leisure, MITIE (our janitors), Culture and Community Services and Tayside Contracts for our birthday cake! Parents, staff and senior pupils gave their time generously and helped make it a success. Here’s to the next 5 years!
S6 planned the first S5/6 Winter Ball in the school on Friday, 9 December. Our students were supported by teachers, Will our technician, the ladies from Tayside contracts who gave their time to prepare food, and John Cassidy who provided the music. Congratulations to our S6 for creating a great night, with proceeds going to our ‘Pennies for the Playgrounds’ appeal.
In primary, our children have been working hard to prepare for their Nativity and Christmas Show. This is one of the highlights of the school year and I am very much looking forward to joining parents on Wednesday evening, 14 December. Our fantastic P7 talented fundraisers have been developing their enterprising skills and will be selling a range of products before the Show in aid of SCIAF. Our raffle this year will be in support of the playground appeal.
Earlier in the term our P7 made some very creative Anderson Shelters as part of their interdisciplinary learning on World War II. This time it was the turn of P3 who produced amazingly inventive Willy Wonka themed contraptions! Some pictures have been posted on our school twitter account, which can be accessed here.
P5 had a great day out to Edinburgh’s Dynamic Earth to support their science learning.
The nursery team have produced a newsletter for parents and carers which can be accessed here.
And as we look to the fortnight ahead, there are a number of events coming up:
- 14/12 – Nativity and Christmas Show (Primary)
- 15/12 – Christmas Quiz day and Christmas lunch. Wear a Christmas jumper day!
- 20/12, 21/12, 22/12 – Primary Christmas Parties
- 21/12 – Christmas Show (Secondary)
There are also a number of fun lunchtime events for secondary pupils in aid of charity! And, of course, throughout this time we are marking Advent through religious assemblies, celebrations and in our religious education learning.
Please note that the 15 December (Christmas Jumper Day!) is a non-uniform day. Pupils are asked to make a suggested donation of £1 to our playground appeal. This can be handed in to primary class teachers or secondary tutor teachers in advance or on the day. As always, thank you for your generosity.
I have sent letters out to parents about a number of issues including uniform, litter and parking. I am really grateful for all the support and goodwill we receive from parents and carers. This school can only be as good as we are all willing to make it, and parents and carers are crucial if we are to improve and get it right for every single child in St John’s RC Academy.
There will be newsletter just before the end of term, so this will (probably) be my last blog for this term. For now, I wish you all the joys and blessings of Christmas and hope that the real message of this season is shared and lived in every home.
God bless you and your family,
Seán P Hagney
