2 September 2016 – Focus on Secondary
We’re now off and running and the school year is in full swing! Our secondary pupils are working hard and have made an excellent start to the year. S1 are settling in well and the many I’ve spoken to have been really positive about their experience so far.
As usual, the first few weeks have been dominated by the arrival of new pupils (in S1 and elsewhere), exam results and course changes, getting to grips with new routines and planning for the year ahead. We’ve also welcomed new teaching staff to the school: Miss Kirstin Hardie (Maths), Miss Gemma Docherty (Music), Miss Clare Lynch (English), Miss Michelle Roberts (Art and Design), Miss Corin Beattie (Drama) and Miss Ciara Cosgrove (English). We wish them every success.
Over the summer, a number of our S6 pupils undertook their 4 week Career Ready internships in workplaces across Perth and Kinross. These placements give our students real opportunities to experience the world of work. Since their return to school, they have been reporting on their experiences and their learning to their mentors and school staff. I thank all the businesses who give so generously of their time and resources to help our learners.
Last night, the S2 Ski Trip information evening, led by group leader Mr Barker, was held. It was a very successful evening, and we currently have 47 going on the trip. There’s 1 place left! Also last night, I was joined by staff from across the school, and from schools across Dunkeld Diocese, at the Catholic Teachers’ Annual Mass in Dundee. In his homily, Bishop Stephen reminded us of our call to serve as teachers and the importance of the teaching vocation. You may already have noticed that there is no Family Mass planned for September. We have agreed with Bishop Stephen to delay this until 30 November (St Andrew’s Day) when he will rededicate our school and mark our 5th birthday since our official opening. We are planning some special events around this time also to celebrate 5 years since the opening of the school and campus – so please look out for this.
Earlier this week, around half of our S1 cohort travelled to Lendrick Muir for an overnight with the Support Team. The group had opportunities to work together and have a lot of fun too! The feedback and reflections have been very positive, and many of our new pupils have really benefitted from getting to know other students and staff better. We hope to build on this success in future.
This year we have put in place an enhanced training programme for our prefects and senior team to enable them to make the most of their roles in school. S6 prefect mentors will be reading buddies to pupils in secondary and spent this afternoon taking part in training organised by Mrs McCabe (PT English) and Mr McAninch (DHT). I believe this important work will really make a difference to our pupils’ reading ability and confidence.
On Wednesday, 7 Sept at 7pm, the Parent Council hold their Annual General Meeting. Please attend if you can.
Finally – our annual data check. Please return this: it is very important that our information is complete and up-to-date. Also, please consider our ICT and mobile phone policies and discuss these with your child.
I am looking forward to the year ahead and continuing to work with you and your children.
With every good wish,
Seán P Hagney
Headteacher and Campus Leader
