24 June 2016 – Focus on Secondary

Dear Parents/Carers

The last few weeks have been a particularly hectic time, but I wanted to write to you on our Patronal Feast Day today and thank you for your support over the past year.  I am particularly grateful for the support our families have given at the recent Sports, S1-2 and S3-6 Award Ceremonies.  Each of these have been wonderful celebrations of the achievements of our pupils.

I am particularly thankful to Roddy Grant and John Swinney MSP for their keynote speeches at the Sports and S3-6 Award Ceremonies.  Roddy Grant shared his story of how sport helped him to cope with ADHD as he grew up, and the power of sport to change lives.  Our local MSP, Depute First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills, John Swinney, spoke of his learning journey and the importance of education on individuals, on families and on our country.  Mr Swinney also spoke highly of our school, praising our ethos and achievements, and celebrating the individual achievements of our young people.

These events require a great deal of preparation, and I thank our staff for their dedication and commitment to ensuring these ceremonies were truly a celebration of our young people.  Thanks also to Mr Robertson and others for putting together presentations highlighting our successes and showing off our young people! You can link to these here:

I also extend my congratulations to St Andrew House for winning both the Sports and the Overall House Shields this year.  Particular congratulations to House Captains, Rosa and Anton.

Congratulations also to former Headteacher of St John’s RC Academy, Mrs Audrey May, who received the Papal Award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice for her services to Catholic education.

As I write, the referendum result is in and it is clear that the UK has voted to leave the EU.  We understand that there now follows a time of uncertainty for the country, and also for many of our families.  Please know and remember that we are committed to support all the children and families of St John’s RC Academy.

Other information:

  • The newsletter will be out soon sharing lots of what we’ve been up to this term.
  • As always, please remember that our uniform information is available on this website.
  • At the start of the new term we will also be relaunching our mobile phone policy.  We are having some significant issues around mobile phone use by pupils which is having a negative impact on learning.  While phones are allowed in the secondary school, they can only be used in class with the express permission of the teacher and should not be used between classes.  They should be put away in bags or in your child’s locker and switched off at these times.  I would ask that parents do not directly contact their children during the school day, but rather contact the school office if required.  We will provide more detail on this at the start of the new term.
  • School Holiday dates for 2016-17 and 2017-18 are here.

For now, let me wish you a wonderful summer.

With every good wish,

Seán P Hagney
