28 June 2017 – All Through
Dear Parents and Carers
As the academic year comes to a close, I wanted to very briefly thank you for all your support over the past twelve months in helping us to provide great learning experiences for all the children and young people in St John’s RC Academy.
As I write this blog, our newsletter is being finalised and I have an opportunity there to reflect on the term and the past year. Please take the time to read over the successes of our children and young people in what has been a busy, busy year!
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had the opportunity to celebrate these achievements through a number of award ceremonies, including our P1-6 Sports and Attendance Awards, S1-2 and S3-6 Achievement Ceremonies and the P7 Leavers’ Ceremony. These have been really special occasions where we can all celebrate our children’s endeavours. Thank you to all the parents who came along to these events and supported your child and the whole school.
The school uniform leaflet has been updated. Please remember – no leggings, jeggings or jeans! (This feels like my new motto!) We are looking for all our pupils to look smart in their uniform and ready to learn at all times, and we really appreciate the support of parents in this.
For those with children sitting exams, please remember that there is no appeal system in Scotland anymore. This has been replaced with a post-results service. If you click on this link you can find out about our policy and procedures should a re-mark or a clerical check of results be deemed appropriate.
We have been working hard to help families meet the costs which arise from schooling. After speaking with our Parent Council and other parents, we are piloting a guide (for primary and secondary) which outlines the costs you can expect to pay over the school year, including outings, non-uniform days, optional extras, etc. We have decided to reallocate funds within the secondary school to reduce our Home Economics cost to £10 for all pupils. This represents a very significant reduction for senior pupils choosing qualifications in Home Economics and we hope this will make them more accessible to all our pupils. Please remember that there are a number of grants and benefits which young people and families are entitled to if you are in receipt of certain benefits. You can find out more on the PKC website or from our campus reception. Please also be aware that if any costs cause you financial difficulty, please speak to a member of staff. We would never want a child to miss out on an opportunity to learn.
Finally, I would like to join with you in thanking all our staff who have worked tirelessly over the past year to get it right for the children and young people of St John’s RC Academy. I know from your many comments, emails and letters that you are grateful to them for all that they do. I know from working with them that they really do deserve the summer holidays so that they can come back refreshed in August!
I hope you too have a fantastic summer with your children.
Every best wish,
Seán P Hagney
