Rights Respecting School Award: Level 2 report published

In November 2014, representatives from UNICEF UK visited our school, met with pupils, parents and staff and evaluated our progress as a Rights Respecting School.  As a result, we have achieved the Level 2 Award: a first for an all-through school in the UK.  You can read the full report by clicking here.

Mr Seán Hagney, Acting Headteacher, said, ‘I am delighted that UNICEF UK has recognised that St John’s RC Academy has embedded the values of the Rights Respecting School Award throughout our school.  I understand we are the first all-through school in the UK to receive this award at Level 2, and only the second secondary school in Scotland to achieve this.  The importance of understanding and promoting children’s rights is crucial – we live in a world that does not always respect the rights of others, and learning about these and living these out in our own community is the first step to making our world a better place for all.  I am very proud of all our children, parents, partners and staff for their commitment to the Rights Respecting School Award and promoting the UNCRC in what we learn and in our relationships with one another.’ The assessors identified the following as key strengths of the school:

  • Polite, confident pupils who were proud of their school
  • High level of pupil participation throughout the school
  • The extent to which the wider community is actively involved in RRSA
  • The clear connections between initiatives such as Fairtrade and the UNCRC
  • High quality of displays linked to UNCRC throughout all stages and departments of the school
  • Commitment to the award from all members of the school staff
