YOUTH AND PHILANTHROPY INITIATIVE

Originating in Canada, YPI is now an international programme and is delivered in secondary school across Scotland. The programme is principally funded and managed in Scotland by The Wood Foundation and St John’s Academy has been delivering the programme to S3 pupils for a number of years.

What is YPI?

The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community. Each participating school, each year is responsible for directing a £3000 YPI Grant to a local charity through a unique programme of team work, research and competition. YPI Scotland is all about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind, and supporting the issues young people care most about. This session, as in past sessions, our S3 pupils have met with a number of volunteers, staff members and charity representatives to research and gather information about their chosen charities. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the charity personnel that worked with our pupils for the time and commitment they have shown to them and our school community.

Once the information was gathered the pupils then presented their findings in a series of class and whole-school semi-finals, the standard of preparation for and presentation at these events was incredibly high and culminated in the following 5 groups being selected to present at our virtual final on Wednesday 1 June 2021:

Overall event winners.
Milly Muir and Ruthee Menmuir, representing The Sunshine Box.

● Georgi Nikolov and William Marshall (Perth Autism Support, SC048183)
● Milly Muir and Ruthee Menmuir (The Sunshine Box, SC046825)
● Zander Tough, Louise Ward and Julia Wypasek (Trellis, SC037429)
● Rebecca McAninch, Chloe McKeag and Samara Anderson (SHIP, SC047929)

Due to the current restrictions our finalists recorded their presentations, the judges then met with (following social distancing restrictions) to view and deliberate.

The judging panel was made up of Dr Robert Staines, Depute Headteacher, Krista Golder, Senior School Technician, Grant Murray, Session 2021/21 Head Boy and Calista Donald, Session 2021/22 Head Girl. They were supported (virtually) by Kenny McKeown, YPI Regional Facilitator – Dundee, Angus and Perth & Kinross. They had the difficult job of judging the pupil presentations – which was not an easy task in light of the outstanding work they produced.  After much deliberation, it was decided that the overall event winners were Milly Muir and Ruthee Menmuir, representing The Sunshine Box.
